Garage Door Won't Close? Start With the Safety System
A garage door that opens fine but refuses to close is a different animal from a door that won’t move at all. When a door won’t close, the mechanical side is usually healthy. The springs lifted it, the track carried it. What’s stopping it is almost always the opener’s safety system, and the door’s exact behavior tells you which part.
Read what the door is doing
- Starts down, then reverses right back up - and the opener light flashes. That’s the photo-eye sensors. The opener thinks something is in the doorway, so it refuses to close on it. This is the cause in roughly half of the won’t-close calls we take.
- Closes almost all the way, touches down, then reverses. The opener met resistance at the floor and read it as an obstruction. Sometimes there really is one - ice ridged under the door in January, gravel washed onto the pad - and sometimes the travel limit is set a hair too deep, so the door “hits” a floor it should just be meeting.
- Closes while you hold the wall button, but not from the remote. That’s the built-in sensor bypass, which confirms the sensors are the problem. Use it to get the door shut once, then fix the sensors.
- Clicks or beeps, but nothing moves. Look for a lock icon on the wall console. Most consoles have a lock or “vacation” switch that’s easy to lean a rake against.
The sensor check
The two small sensors sit near the floor on either side of the track, facing each other across the opening. Each should show a steady light.
- One is dark or blinking: they’ve lost sight of each other. Nudge the bracket until the light steadies - they go out of square from a bumped trash can or a sagging bracket screw.
- Lenses look fine but it still reverses: wipe both lenses, clear cobwebs, and check for anything low in the beam path - a shovel handle, a bag edge, a drift of leaves.
- It only acts up at certain times of day: low sun can flood one lens and blind it. Winter sun sits low enough here to do this on clear afternoons; a short cardboard shade tube around the lens fixes it.
The threshold check
If the door reverses at the floor rather than mid-travel, look at where it lands. A ridge of ice, a stone from a gravel drive, or a bottom seal that has stiffened and folded under can all read as an obstruction. Clear the line where the door meets the pad and try again before touching any settings.
What not to do
Don’t defeat the sensors - not by unplugging them, not by taping them together facing each other on the wall. The reverse system is what keeps a closing door off a pet, a bumper, or a kid chasing a ball, and it’s been required on openers for good reason since 1993. And don’t crank the force or limit screws to bully the door down. Those settings are the difference between a door that stops when it should and one that doesn’t. Small, deliberate adjustments only - or leave them to a tech.
When it’s the opener itself
If the sensors glow steady, the floor is clear, and the door still won’t close - or it reverses at a different point every time - the problem has moved inside the machine: a failing logic board, a worn travel assembly, or a door that’s started binding in the track hard enough to trip the force limit. That’s an opener repair visit, and if binding is the cause, the fix is door-side, not opener-side - rollers, track, or lubrication.
